I am not sure about the speed but we always calculated a journey as 2 mins per station plus 2 mins per change.... we were never very far out.

about 20mph but with stops its alot slower, travelling across london is on average 10mph as my college was 26 miles away in kent and it took me 2.5 hours, my girlfriends is 17 miles away and thats 1.5
