There are some things I can't bear to think about and my mind always wants to "change the subject". I don't know if this is healthy, or should I face those things?

Most of the things I shy away from are guilt things. There's nothing I can do to change them.

Yes, it certainly does. Some things, my mind wont even let me remember. I am not sure how healthy it is but, as a coping mechanism, it seems to work well.

As I walk down the my life's path, my policy is to spend most of my time moving and looking forward, to stop occasionally when I need to figure out how to proceed, and to look back at the past for reflection but to never walk backwards. Reflecting on your past is a good way to get perspective on your life and help plan your future. But try not to ever get stuck on memories because the past is written in stone, unchangeable. We all have regrets and experiences that we wished never happened to us. The best we can do is to learn from the past and try to avoid unfavorable circumstances in future. Ruminating on pain and regret will make you unhappy and a drag to be around.

sometimes, but certainly not always. .

everything I know about my friends is something I know from the past, so obviously I have to remember things that happened between them and myselves, who they are, etc. .

which is all based on my experience, which is all in the past.

I don't often think much about my distant past, but sometimes I have reason to. It's not that I'm blocking it out so much as that it just is so long ago, it almost is another world or lifetime.

Anything you refuse to face will continue to haunt you and make you incapable of dealing with those issues brought up by the event in question. The ENTIRE point of therapy is to help the patient address and deal with past issues.

There are definitely times I would like to forget. My adult life is much better than my childhood was. When I start thinking about the bad times and why this and that happened, I just stop and say, so what, that was then and this is now.
