why do cramps hurt when you have your period? why is it a painful thing for your uterus lining to shed?

Because sometimes you are passing clots of blood through the cervix.

It's because your uterus is contracting. The cervix is opening in order for all that blood to pass through. It's the same type of pain that women feel when they're in labor.

Your uterin walls need to contract to push out the lining of the uterus.
