I have bought a chemical to pour down the drain but I hate to use that. They are really bad in our basement, but they are in the rooms upstairs, too. If you have had them, please, please tell me what to do. Thanks.

Drain flies are actually a kind of moth. The larvae live in drains on mold or fungus in the drain. You will probably have to use the chemical you bought (assuming that is what it's for) to get control of them. Once you kill the larvae you may want to use a bug bomb (they come in 3-packs) and are usually very effective on drain flies.

Once both adults and larvae are dead you can prevent the problem by pouring a cup of bleach down the drain once a month.

Sounds like the basement is the source! Do you use ALL the drains in the basement periodically?? If not, the trap(s) may have evaporated. Run some water down the line and keep those traps full. Put your nose near the openings.....smell sewer gas? If so, that's it!
