I believe this question has multiple answers.
#1. Marketing a healthier lifestyle. Notice how many subs and salads have 6 grams of fat or less. How many items at McDonald's or Burger King can say that?
#2. Going after the big boys of lunch. Since Subway is already the #1 Sub sandwich chain in the world, there is no need in gunning after #2, right? So why not compete against the #1 burger places? McDonald's and Burger King.
So it all boils down to this. If we can offer you a healthier, fresher, tastier lunch for about the same price . . . why wouldn't you choose Subway? Eat Fresh!

Their whole marketing is based around the idea that eating at Subways is healthier for you. They can't say that eating a subway sandwich is healthier than eating a Togo/Quiznos sandwich because they are both sandwiches with vegetables on them. So they have to pick something that is unhealthy aka McDonald's or whomever. McDonald's is famous for how much fat, calories, sodium, etc is in their food so they make easy targets. If Subway's marketing pitch was that their sandwich's tasted better than others, then they would go against Quiznos and the like.

They can't compete with the taste of Quizno's or Togo's. Both of them provide more food for their sandwiches (meat and cheese), and the prices are relatively the same. If they allow the attack on them from the other sandwich joints, then they will have to defend their food choices. Togo's has a deal where you get half a sandwich and half a salad for the basically the same price of a sandwich. Subway doesn't even make decent salads (my opinion of course). Subway's bread is always soggy and soft, then they are really skimpy when it comes to all of the toppings, including veggies which are really cheap. They don't want to open that can of worms.

I LOOOOOOOOOVE Subway's BMT sandwich! Honey Oat bread please!
I think it's basically about the spoke person, Jared, who lost weight eating lots of Subway sandwiches. I think that they compare themselves with burger joints to get across that Subway is much healthier, not as fatty, and that it's healthy eating and that burger joints aren't. Maybe it's meant to be more geared towards people who are struggling with weight or health issues, like Jared was way heavy once. I remembered in one of his past commercials he introduced his wife, and there was a commercial a few years ago that showed other people who lost weight off of Subway. It's to encourage people to take the Subway challenge if they need to lose weight. That's my analysis!
Hope that helps. Good question!

They compare themselves based on nutritional factors. Subs are going to be more healthier than burgers. When comparing the nutrition facts between a sub and a burger, its going to be a huge difference in nutrional value. If they compared nutritional value with another sub, there really would not be a big difference. They want to make a bigger impact, so a consumer is going to be more impressed and choose their sub over a hamburger.

Because so many people go to fast food joints and subway is a fast food place; they're showing the huge difference in fat content, it wouldn't be much comparison in another sub shop.
