I was vegan from birth I think. Until a few years ago I had never eaten meat and had no desire for it. Then my doctor decided I need to try some because of a serious protien thing. I don't care how well you monitor things there is not enough in nuts and jello to work for you. As part of the human race we have teeth designed for both types of food and we should consume both. Since begginning my journey as an Omivore I have learned I really like the porks and turkey. Chicken took me two years to learn to like and beef is low low low on my list of foods.

There are a whole lot of problems associated with vegan and unless you put real thought into it you're playing with a time bomb. I would say that 85% of my meals are still free of meat but I do eat some now to stay healthy.

How the animals are raised is an issue to be corrected. In Britain there is free range and it has proven the best way for all concerned. I would never think of buying anything from eastern Europe and when I lived in the states I made sure that the meat came from a reputable butcher who grew and slaughtered his own.

Vegetarianism clears the cholesterol infested brain.
Think about it.
Hitler was born a meat eater and ended up as a bum.

He became a vegetarian and he evolved to become the Fuhrer of Germany, despite these facts:

he was a foreigner and had to get his citizenship less than two
months from the election;

his German was the austrian type which clearly marked him as an immigrant;

he was very different from most other Germans___ he was short, dark haired, and of suspicious ancestry, at least 25 percent Jewish.

Despite these and many other things against him,

VEGETARIANISM made him worthy of ruling Germany and the thick skulled meat eaters.

I became a vegetarian because, living in the u.k., it is possible to survive on a healthy and balanced diet without killing anything with a pulse. If I somehow ended up on a desert island, and the only food around was fish or rabbits (I know, a weird island that can sustain rabbits, without having any carrots or whatever) I would certainly eat the rabbits or fish. Not saying I think my life is any more important than a fish or a rabbit, just that while I don't need to kill anything, I wont.

I really don't know what can beat meat and two veg with thick gravy to moisten the mashed potatoe and lubcricate the passage of the yorkshire pud through the mouth and throaght - ah bliss!
Whilst vegetarianism is supposed to be healthier than a NORMAL mixed dietary regime, I cannot really understand why but there are apparently those who just don't like meat.
Their loss good luck to them!

I became veggie 21yrs ago because basically I don't like the taste or texture of meat.Then I did take a look at the details of how meat gets to the table. I was shocked by the meat market and production and glad I changed.Respect to those who kick up a stink about it.
My family only ate free range meat [we had a small holding].

For some of the proven health benefits of a well planned vegetarian diet.

Out of concern for the well being of defenseless animals. In protest of reckless corporate farming and assembly line slaughter houses.

For the conservation of resources.

Honestly, the veggie/vegan ways are very healthy, compassionate and correct in most aspects. They're more expensive if done right, than "balanced diets"... however Vegans tend to be sick less and have more energy. I'd be one if I didn't love meat so freakin' much.

You could also ask why do people go on the Atkins diet? It's a matter of choice, or a belief in their principals. Our choices are what make us individuals.

It's not because I love animals.
but rather...
Because I hate plants.

but more seriously-
My reasons were twofold. 1. Health, and 2. Environment.
I'm not devout, and i do eat fish- but it was a decision to eat much lower on the food chain.
