As much as it WANTS to achieve.
Opposed to evil, good stands for progress and success of one's own goals no matter how constructive or destructive they appear to someone else. Like evil though, good is left to interpretation and what may seem to be helpful and beneficial to one may seem to be pointless or distracting unto another.
Unlike evil though, good isn't defined by opposition, but by the intiator. Whoever decides to pursue a course of action decides and defines what he will align himself with and what he will encourage in the eyes of others. The "morals" and "ethics" which define goodness must be understood in both real and liberal terms though so as to balance compassion with pragmatism and not become overbearingly naive or cynical.
Realists view M+E as rules which are established to further restrict or guide others behavior. They are used to manipulate in order to capitulate - they direct and influence in order to exploit others by exposing their vulnerabilities. This isn't necessarily evil because the rules' creators have a goal in mind, so in order to achieve it, they must stabilize their environment and insure their efforts already invested.
To open-minded individuals though, M+E are used to achieve a natural balance for the universe. Individuals are expected to explore and discover possibilities and potential for their own growth. Rules aren't established in order to achieve an objective, but to preserve a current system being used to find truth. This isn't necessarily good though because such rules prevent certain behaviors from being recognized as acceptable. This can put liberal followers in a bind once they realize the traditions which were being practiced were actually hiding an entire realm of knowledge from the community.
Conventionally, the second perception is used to start a modern hero's which has to decide between traditionalism and modernism not because he sees it as a choice for his own path, but because he wishes to understand the truth. As the hero adventures, his maturity is complicated by the fact that his black and white view becomes skewed in a world of color where multiple dimensions of problem solving or culture force him to realize that truth doesn't exist in itself. The hero then needs to find a set of rules to live his life and resorts to realism. This leads to complications and a climax (or 2 or 3 or 20 or 30) which burdens the hero making him want to live a moderate lifestyle so as to not try to balance the universe.
I could go on and on explaining how genuine story telling relates to an audience, but you asked about the potential for good, not what defines our journey through life.
Ultimately, good comes from our abilities, gifts, talents, and skills; our will to perform and execute what we desire; and our exposure to influence from our environment. Henceforth, the amount of good which mankind is capable of all depends upon what we WANT and how much good we WANT to do.

Much more than he/she realizes is a positive way. There is nothing better than mankind for there is no competition to base that on . Mankind is one of a kind so far in this Universe to our knowledge. God is Supreme therefore no competition. Animals are a separate breed and they are of no competition. Man against man is all there is and that is futile. No one is alike so no competition. There might be something like sports competition but that is the only way. Mankind is amazingly talented and brilliant to the point of worship in some cases. But if we would all realize that we all have those talents in us we would be able to all do amazing things to better our world in all different ways. It just takes faith and self-confidence, confidence in others to do the same and make a good winning team.

Hi Adam - The answer to this is very subjective. Mankind is capable of incredible good, but also of incredible evil. This is called freedom of choice. A lot of things play a role in goodness, including greed and pride and lifestyle and environment, but the bottom line is we have the CHOICE to do good or evil ALWAYS. Probably no other thing can make a cognitive choice so the comparison to other things would not be reasonable.

Mankind is capable of all good, for the fact that mankind controls all life. Mankind can choose to end any life he wishes, but at the same time, create any life he wishes.
I would say God is more good than mankind, but in philosophy, using God is never a good justification.
The only think more good than man, is a good man.
