Happiness comes from within you. Nobody else can make you angry, sad, hurt or anything else without your permission. If you don't give them permission they can't make you feel any way. Until you recognise that fact and decide to take control and responsibility for it you will never be happy. Once you determine you are going to be happy you can be. It's all your choice.

What may be lasting happiness to you maybe a life of lasting misery to me. So we all have our own ways of achieving what we perceive as happiness. So you stick with your way to achieve lasting happiness. And do you know one morning you will wake up and realise it has been there all the time.

First of all i know this is just semantics but i think 'happiness' is one of those fleeting emotions, its impossible to ever keep that feeling of absolute elation and happiness its not meant to be last like pure rage and extreme sadness they always have to subside into something more muted. And so i think contentment might be a more acheivable word. Afterall it is just a word, i think its a personal thing and everybody has different yards sticks for it but it always strikes me that people who chase after things...possesions, money, people even never seem contented enough..they always strive for something else. Which in part is fine because dreams are what drives humanity but for me i think contentment comes when we are able to be comfortable with ourselves with or in spite of society. Society tells us we must do this or that because we 'should'...get married....have kids...settle down...go to university ...etc Once we realise that the only thing we owe society is to be true to ourselves then contenment can't be far away. This doesn't mean being selfish, you help people because you want to not out of obligation, you pay your taxes because you are a part of a larger community, you respect other peoples opinions because they are entitled to one as much as you are. Just because you listen doesn't mean you are betraying your own believes it means that you are willing to accept that the world is big and there are many ways to look at it. Maybe i'm right maybe i'm not but it seems to work for me.

By treating others the way you'd like to be treated. By accepting life for what it is, a beautiful, though sometimes painful journey. By not feeling that things are owed to you and instead trying to earn the things that you desire. By appreciating every glorious smell, sound, or act that comes your way be it having a baby or finding out your flat mate has left you some coffee in the pot. By putting your problems in perspective and learnig from them. And above all remembering that after all 'worse things have happened at sea'

This first of all is in knowing that life is yours whether you like it or not - it is your job. And then the rest of the happiness is in your intelligence. There is not point in keep liking what can be improved and therefore liked more, and more easily. If you do not like what you have then we feel sorry for you and hope that you will change your mind. If on the other hand, you do like what you have, then get down to work, as you already know what you need to do.

Yes to not concern yourself with happiness.

Put your heart and soul into everything you do.
Don't judge to quickly the the things you think you like and the things you think you don't.
Treat both with the same passion.

Don't dwell in the past and if you do realise it.
Don't dwell in the future and if you do realise it.

Be mindful of the present now and what your actions are.

Happy is the outcome not the goal.

We all spend a lot of time chasing dreams which never materialise so we have to accept our lot and look for positive aspects for our future happiness.
Part of the fun is not knowing what is around the corner so we can live in hope for something good.

Have you ever seen the movie Pay It Forward? If not I suggest that you do. It's all about helping people out and then that person in turn helps someone else out and so on and so on. I know for me personally I try to help at least one person a day or I'll try and do at least one nice thing a day, and that seems to work for me.

I agree with Adam...so what is eternal/lasting happiness? If you believe in God, he IS eternal/everlasting and teaches tons about love and being happy.

Maybe: Try to find a religioius group that could help you understand His nature and your purpose in life.

Also, think outside of yourself and try to focus on helping others achieve happiness, you will find yourself feeling fulfulled as well.
