I personally think it is best that your child eventually drift off to sleep on his own w/o rocking... and singing.. etc. So when is that? I have a 7 1/2 mo old little boy and our nightly ritual hasn't changed. We play... we eat.. we have bath time.. we play... and then he drinks his milk as I rock him to sleep. Im just curious when that should be changed to laying him in his crib and letting him fall asleep on his own.

Is it too soon?

(Please say yes it is too soon!... haha Just kiddin!! I am soo gonna miss it when it's time!)

Keep on doing what you are doing. When he doesn't want his nightly ritual, he'll let you know. Hold onto those moments for as long as you can because once they are gone, they're gone forever. My children are grown now but I do miss the times when they were little. Take the time for your baby, you won't regret it.

It is not too soon – At 7 ½ mo. you should be happy he’s sleeping thru the night - if you enjoy the time together why not it enjoy it! it certainly will not hurt him … by age you 2 you should be able to put him to bed and have him will fall asleep on his own…

My sister nursed all her kids till age 1 they were rocked to sleep till age 2 and slept in the parents room – they moved into there own rooms by age 3 and were put to bed with a story a prayer and a kiss good night… they are all teenagers now and very well adjusted, brilliant kids.

If he’s’ not falling asleep on his own by age 4 – then you can worry … ;)
People these days tend to want their children to grow up too fast… let babies be babies…

Your son should be learning to fall asleep on his own as soon as possible. It helps to promote healthy sleep patterns that will stick with him for the rest of his life. You already have a good bedtime ritual up until after the bath. You should have a quiet time with him after his bath to keep him calm and let him know that it is time to settle down. Maybe read a book to him or help him brush his teeth. Its fine to let him drink his milk before bed too, but make sure it is dark in the room and you are not talking to him. As soon as he is done with his milk, lay him in his bed and leave the room. He will learn to fall asleep on his own in a week or two. Just stick to the routine. It sounds like you already have a routine, and that is a good start. Just tweek it a little so he knows that bedtime is a calm time, and he will begin to have healthier sleep habits early on in life. You will also find that he sleeps longer at night once he gets used to falling asleep on his own. He will have longer and more restful sleep. He will wake in a better mood after a while too, which you will LOVE! Good luck!

my son nursed himself to sleep for the first four months....after that i nursed him and then put him in his crib where he would cry for about ten minutes and then start to "talk" himself to sleep....he would make these long sighs and eventually drift off. My doc said that starting at 4-6 months is when a baby should be able to fall asleep on his own. I did miss him in the bed with us too!

With my daughter, I "weened" her off of rocking by just laying next to her while giving her milk. Eventually, I just layed her in the crib and stood there while she drank and went to sleep. It took a month or so, but it's beneficial. My daughter is now 18months and has no problem climbing into her toddler bed, pulling up covers, grabbing Dora and going to sleep. :)

Honestly if it is not a hugh task to put him to sleep rocking (Like it only takes 5 minutes) then i dont think you should stop rocking him. But if he is one of those babies like mine(hehe) that takes like 40 mins to rock to sleep then you should start letting him cry a little to go to sleep (no longer then 5-10 mins) With my daughter she went to bed on her own since she was like 2 months old,. My son, he is 5 mnths, still needs and wants to be rocked. I am slowly starting to let him cry now to put him to bed in his crib. I feel that if I dont do that he is going to be way to much of a mommys boy and then would want me to rock him 24/7 hehe, but its totally up to you on what your personal preferences are. If you are too tired to do that, then I suggest you start with the crib now cuz he is getting way older!! Good luck with everything!!!!

every child is different my son didn't like rocking he would want to nurse all night long to sleep finally around 8-9 months I let him cry it out for 15 minutes and then he would be asleep. I guess the answer is you have to do whatever works for you and feels right for you.

I think that every child is different and that you should do what you feel is right for you and your family.

My son currently loves being nursed or rocked to sleep.

its hard to break babies of that routine, they get used to the cuddeling and not too happy about letting it go. i let my son soothe himself to sleep since he was about 3 weeks.
