The problem is when you cut or disturb the asbestos it breaks into tiny barbed particles. The dust with these particles get trapped in the lung tissue and can cause cancer and other respiratory problems.
This dust is very fine and passes through a standard furnace air filter to constantly be recirculated throughout the home.
It's best to leave the asbestos products untouched. For your family's safety, if you plan to remove any, have a professional company do it for you. They have containment and disposal procedures which won't leave your home contaminated with the extremely harmful dust it produces.

Asbestos was popular in the fifties as a building material, as it did'nt warp, and seemed to be stable. It was usually drenched in gloss paint, which made it safe.
It's only when it's disturbed that the trouble starts, as the particles are ultra fine.
Put up an external type of spot, I see a great range in B & Q (UK)

If you live in Britain, you are not allowed to disturb any asbestos, you can`t make holes in it ot break it up or dismantle it. It has to be done by someone who has a licence to operate and dispose of it. There are very high fines for any one breaking this rule.

For goodness sakes! Get it out of your home! Would you leave other health hazards in your home, exposing you, your family and friends to harm? It is absolutely dangerous. That's proven. Call your county and get the health inspector out there. Find out who to hire to get it out safely. Sometimes some counties will do it for free.
