Call him whatever you like, as long as it's not slanderous or libellous so he can't sue you!! ; ) Your solicitor will keep calling him your husband until you get your Decree Absolute, but you're free to call him "the ex", "Slugface", whatever you like!

I don't know why, perhaps because it's so high schoolish, but I dislike the use of "Ex" to refer to anything that is no more. It's just a matter of the way it sounds rather than an issue of propriety, but "former" sounds sooooo much better . . . to me at least.
"My husband, from whom (thank heaven) I am separated" is lengthy, but after it has been said once and the status of this is clear, just "he" will do the job if further reference becomes necessary.
Just personal taste, and not important.

Well he's not longer your husband so there is not need for you to refer him as your husband if he was you can refer him but he's now your ex husband

Whatever you're comfortable with is fine. Unless a guy is trying to date you Then you really should let the guy know that you are not officially divorced yet.
If kids are involved, you can always refer to this person as

It is up to you, how you want to call him..... however you feel good, comfortable and happy. You can call him ex-husband or just ex or call him with his first name. You can also call each other as a good friend and stay that way rest of your life.
