I always get nervous when I turn on switches while doing the dishes. But I do it anyway. Still I wonder if I could be electrocuted. My house is only 2 years old, so do newer outlets allow for a little water?

OMG nascarguy better stick to racing... in fact yes there is a possibility you could get socked, but only of the water dripped into the switch and conducted along the water path inside your gloves... AND another part of you body was grounded....which would be rare, but it indeed COULD happen... and NOOOO GFCI devices are on any standard light switch...unless its outside or around a sink...and NOOOO never stand in a tub and try this as he suggested... a GFCI device is nice and saves lives.. BUT would you do it and "Hope" its working properly and put your life on the line to test it?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I guess... I've never even thought about it, actually. I have thought about this, though--when I'm blow drying my hair, can I drink out of a glass of water and get electrocuted? I've never tried. :/

It's an interesting question, because I believe rubber is electricity-resistant... but then you throw the water into it. I'm going to say if it's possible, the chances are very slim.

No, the switch itself does not conduct electricity. You would have to remove the cover and touch both Hot and Ground at the same time, which with a light switch not happen. the light switch only has Hot connected to it, unless it a two way or more. Hot can not shock by itself only if you in contact with ground.

Most builders and city code enforcers have all adopted the new standard GFI protectors on all electrical circuits. You can stand in a tub of water and turn on switchs and not worry.

Make a decision not to turn into one of those party people who drink all the time and get intimate with guys. Make a decision to be a positive and sweet individual. Be safe...Love you sis. <3

You'll be fine. Are you Amish? Why are you doing dishes by hand?
