This insect is actually commonly known as a WHEEL BUG. Thye are members of the assassin bug group, and are predators of other insects. (Order Hemiptera Suborder Heteroptera)
They are good to have around the house as long as they are in hidden away corners, here they will fedd on many potentially more detrimental species of insects. They are not dangerous to humans, but can give a nasty bite if mistreated. If it really freaks you out, just scoop it up in a jar and either throw it outside or down in the basement, there it can do no harm and you dont have to look at it.
I have only ever seen one in the wild, strange considering I study insects for a living....hahaha Murphy's law right?
I have to disagree with the previous answer I seriously doubt that they are sanguinivorous ectoparasites on humans, the family to whihc they belong contains the several species of true "kissing bugs" but I am pretty sure this one is a strict predator
Good find!

That is called an assassin bug. It belongs to the Order Hemiptera, the family Reduviidae. They are predators and if you pick one up, it will try to zap you with its piercing/sucking probosis. It stings like crazy when that happens. They are also called kissing bugs because they have a habit of sucking blood from their victims while the victim is asleep. The funny part is that when they feed, you don't feel the bite, yet if they attack, it hurts like crazy. They are basically a good bug because they eat other insects. By the way, the Hemiptera are called true bugs so you can call this one a bug and be literally correct.
