I have asked questions in the past related to what people think the difference is between Iraqi insurgents and French freedom-fighters from WWII. The results were, most people said that the French didn't target civilians, and any civilians they did hit were "mistakes".
Well, funny thing that, it turns out that the Iraqis aren't targeting civilians either, in fact less than five percent of attacks by insurgents (from 2003-2004) were against civillians.
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=15&ItemID=7670
And, seeing as how the majority of Iraqis favor immediate US pullout (7 out of 10). And yet a smaller majority (6 out of 10) support attacks on US forces.

So, knowing this, how can we call the insurgents terrorists, and not freedom-fighters? Will you merely ignore the statistics which I have shown you? or will you find some way to explain this one cons?
Oh, and P.S. Give me thumbs down, they show that

You're right sjsosullivan, the majority of the casualities are civilians. And since the civillians make up only 4.1 percent of insurgent kills, who do you think is doing all the killing? *cough cough* coalition forces *cough cough*

the French fighter caused heavy casualties on the German side, but did not impend progress due to the blitzkreig tactics
in Iraq: the ones that kill fellow Iraqis of only 1 religon {shiite killing sunni} are in a civil war
the ones who target civillians and target whoever wherever {most forgeiners} are TERRORISTS
the ones who target U.S. forces ONLY are Freedom Fighers.

Of all of the casualties in Iraq, the largest number are civilians, regardless of what the targets were. As to the French Partisans, they were fighting to restore their national borders and government, as it was, prior to the German blitzkrieg. The insurgents are fighting for what? They have no unified message. No unified enemy. They are just thugs and killers, looking to have any sort of legitimacy to do what they are doing. Instead of bombing market places, commercial zones, and other such atrocities, they could have led a quiet revolution, by way of political consolidation of power, which is also condoned by the Koran, and the American soldiers would have left sooner, as the Iraqi people chose a new government, Constitution, and filled the ranks of its security forces.
Now, all of that said, I am not trying to take the validity of your argument away. I am merely pointing out a series of valid truths. I am not a conservative. I am not a liberal. But, I do read the newspapers, both domestic and abroad, so I do get to have a more rounded viewpoint on these things.

Your statistics are telling a great story.
First, many civilians approximately 29k between 04 and 05 were killed.
Second maybe you are right that we are at war with Iraq and not an insurgency and we should act like it. I think if we did we could operate with a more true purpose. Stop trying to build infrastructure and the support of the people and just defeat the country.

The freedom fighters were for the most part Socialists and Communists. They hated the Nazi regime and were ALLIES of the USA, along with Josef Stalin and Marshall Tito. Later we enlisted Saddam and Osama as our freedom fighters to create havoc against the Russians and Iranians.
Just maybe the Russians and Iranians have enlisted the Iraqis to be their Freedom Fighters.

We call the Iraqi people insurgents and terrorists because it's convenient for us to do so. It makes us feel better about our role in Iraq by making them look like the bad guys.
I'm not talking about the Al Qaida bunch that want to wipe us off the face of the Earth. I'm only referring to the Iraqi Nationals that are tired of seeing the U.S. military walking their streets.

They can not be freedom fighters because there were terrorist camps that did exist in Iraq, and then left from the invasion of Iraq, and now are fueling the fighting by giving weapons, and provoking violence by attacking certain ethnic groups.

EDIT: hmm, I would love to see you back up the coalition forces killing all of the Iraqi's. Since terrorists, are doing such, and killing a terrorist, also counts as a civilian kill, since they look alike.

Buwahahahahahahahahaha, that poll was covered on numerous other places. It seems that they only asked 150 Sunni arabs, funny that since the Sunni lost power when Saddam got ousted, and make up the brunt of the insurgents, is it any wonder they want us out. Funnier still only 6 of 10 want us gone. Get a new line or a brain.

of course the iraqis have the right to resist the illegal occupation of their land, but some of the insurgents are non-iraqi arabs, so there's not a perfect comparison to be made.
