You could buy it directly from xbox itself but it could be cheaper if you bought it off the high street or online.I think they still sell the starter kit in someplaces.Also some xbox consoles already have an xbox live menu on it if you have an Ethernet cable you could connect it up and register from the console itself.

Any xbox live kit will work for your xbox, it's all the same thing.
You see, xbox360 owners get a free account (silver) so they can access live, but they can't download stuff etc. They can upgrade to the Gold account which is basically access all areas.
The original xbox live account is a gold account basically.

Gamestation and Game both stock the xbox live starter kit for between £30 - £40. This is assuming that you are in the UK of course!
