I've never been to the ballet, so I'm not sure where I should be trying to sit. What is the difference between orchestra and 1st ring seating? The prices are the same. What about the other rings? Any opinions/advice?

This is for the nutracker at the State Theatre in Lincoln Center.

I think the answer Mr. Curious gave is downright irresponsible. People should not earn points for that kind of disrespectful response to a legitimate question.
I have subscriptions to ballets at Lincoln Center and have sat in various locations. The Nutcracker is an action ballet, and you don't need to see the makeup of the dancers. The choreography is far more exciting ,as is the action of the story, so I urge you to sit farther BACK, where you can take it all in. My ideal seats are first row Grand Tier, which will be very difficult to get. But even the sides in the Grand Tier are good. BACK in the orchestra is fine, too, so that you can take in all the action that goes on. My suggestions are (1) DON'T sit in the first or second row orchestra and (2) DON'T sit in the very last row of the Grand Tier or Mezzanine, and (3) DO enjoy the entire ballet by sitting far enough back so that you can appreciate all the happenings in this ballet.

If I could go there and if the prices were affordable I'd sit in the front row center. That way you can see the makeup, the expressions of the actors and dancers.

I have performed many times in Operas and have observed during dress rehearsal. Front row gives such an exciting uplift. It's as if only you can see all this extra. You certainly can not see all this in the balcony.

I've been to the State Theatre three different times and while all seats are good you want to be sure you are situated in a spot where yuo can see the nuts. I bought tickets three years ago, traveled all the way up to New York, and was only able to clearly see the cracker--not a real clear view of the nuts.

So be careful.

As close as you can to the front, as close as you can to the center.
