There is only one astral plane, per se, but it is directly connected to 16 "outer" planes. Note: 7 + 9 = 16! Coincidence? I think not...

Where do you get your numbers? Actually there are none at all since they went out of business in 1975 due to too much competition from Cessna and Piper. Astral just could not build an economical plane and compete with the two giants of the private plane industry at the time, they did have one prototype that flew but it has since been destroyed. Beech was the other player in the industry and has since become a very large factor, but Astral never did make it.
I am so sorry did you mean in the metaphysical sense? I have no idea since I don't believe in that crap.

I see all these numbers and I think to myself..."Self, most of these folks have never actually been to the Astral Plane, but instead are answering with a certainty that they've read or been told by some 'authority figure' knowledgeable in the subject"...To which I reply..."yeah self, you're probably right..."
The answer that you seek lies inside of you.
A number cannot accurately describe or define something that is essentially non-physical. It's like trying to tell someone to go dig half of a hole.
Infinite is the only word I can think of that fits...
As far as "levels" are concerned, they run from the 'lowest' vibration to the 'highest' (With the lowest being composed of entities and locations that fit most of humanities base desires such as sex and violence and the highest being composed of entities and locations that fit with most of humanities higher aspirations such as faith, unconditional love, etc.)
Sort of rings of Heaven and Hell and all points in between, no?

I thought it was 7 and most people, unless extremely wicked and vile, entered somewhere between the 3rd and 5th plane.

I though there was just one, with different levels depending on energy rates...
From what i'e head, the astal/Ethereal is alot more moldable and shapable, since it's a spot of pure infomation..
