Because we are a minority and we scare them. They are scared because we are too much like them and we seem so normal they know they can not be sure that they are not like us.

Many reasons, none of them really good.

Some are religious fanatics, who think they need to beat the sinners into repentance as their duty to their tyrant-god. Some are just a different kind of religious nutcase, who think they can 'beat the queer' out someone and thus save their soul.

Some others are the classic stereotype of the repressed homosexual, using cruelty and violence as a cover for their own feelings.

Most, I think, are people who need someone to blame for their own problems and right now homosexuals (or muslims) are the main 'socially acceptable' scapegoats available.

I don't know that you can generalize that behaviour by saying "people"---only a small, uncouth minority hates them. But these same people also hate people of color, disabled people, people who go through abortions---in other words, you can always find these fiends who don't like anything that is a bit different than the rest of us. I will admit, though that same-sex lust and love do take a bit of adapting to for the majority, who have not until recently been exposed to this side of sexual behavior. Give it time.

Because they have nothing better to do.
They weren't paid enough attention growing up
They were religiously abused
They were spiritually abused
They learned early on that abuse and violent behavior is somehow acceptable
They fear what they don't understand
They were taught by their parents that hate, fear, violence, and generally being mean to anyone is socially acceptable behavior.

They ALL NEED THERAPY.

Ignorance breeds Fear
Fear breeds Hate
Hate breeds Violence.

If someone is violently against homosexuality, I tend to say, "I think he doth protest too much" - which is to say that most gay bashers are gay and can't handle it, so they lash out against gay people in an effort to "prove" that they're not gay.
