Hi, I am looking to buy a laptop. I am a video editor who wants to take his PC desktop workstation off the internet, so that it will get virus-free. The laptop would be my internet, but would also like to use it for light video production on the move. My budget is about 1,000 for this.

Because of the video editing, it would have to have decent ram, processor, video card, and harddrive too! What do you think?

Hmmm - can I be honest and say if you are doing video editing, you WON'T get anything close to what you are after for $1000 (esp looking at a Macbook.)

Best option I would suggest going a Satellite Pro (Toshiba) - well priced and plenty of power.

NB: have always found Mac rendered 3D & Video a lot slower even with comparable hardware - and charge more for the privelage!

Oh, and despite "Crypto's" suggestion, bootcamp is not the solution it is being hyped up to be - still buggy as all hell. Is actually much easier to get OS X working on a PC (google "OSx86" for that one) than it is to get Windows to run bug-free on the Intel Macs...and a damned site cheaper. (OS X also runs nearly twice as fast on a generic PC than it does on Apple's own hardware - thus their efforts to shut this version down!)

Go with a mac desktop. The new OS X "Leopard" can do way more than vista anyways, and there are games available for mac. Oct. 26th I'm planning on buying the new iMac for $1199 if it comes pre installed wth leopard. Anyways, a mac is much more reliable than a pc, I use them both in the same day (macs at school, my pc at home) and I love mac because the OS isn't a POS. Windows freezes all the time and always is vulnerable to viruses that can even destroy your hard drive. Mac's are based on the unix OS, a single kernel operating system, which makes them A LOT less vulnerable. If you think about it, mac is a better buy than pc, sure it cost a little more than a pc, but in the end it will even out. Buy a webcam, anti virus, probably spend money repairing stupid errors in your pc, add some desent software and you probably spent more than that on a pc, when you could have just bought a mac. And the OS will take about a day to learn if that, it is so much easier to operate than a pc. And apple has a help menu in the menu bar that has PC to Mac translations (all programs=macintosh hd, etc.)

No, to the second guy, the better computer all around is the PC. But, becasue you are interested in video editing, you probably should go with the Mac. Only problem is budget, you will probably need more than $1000 to get a Mac laptop. Also, you might try investing in Norton SystemWorks or ZoneAlarm Security Suite, that will get your system virus free for a little less money.

The better comp all around is the mac, especially if you are doing any video editing. The only negative is that I highly doubt you would be able to get a mac for under a $1000. But it is totally worth the investment! I have had my mac for about 3 years and have had no problems with it....where with my PC I was taking it in to get fixed the first month.

i would spend the extra money and get the Mac Book Pro. Its the most reliable in overall terms of doing light editing and being on the internet. with a pc laptop your still subjecting your self to viruses

Now that you can install windows on an Intel MacBook (via Bootcamp), go for an Apple one.
