Q is # of quarters
N is # of nickels
The value is 25Q + 5N = 610
But N = Q + 8
25Q + 5(Q + 8) = 610
25Q + 5Q + 40 = 610
30Q = 570
Q = 570/30 = 19
N = Q + 8 = 19 + 8 = 27
Check
25Q + 5N = 610
25(19) + 5(27) = 610
475 + 135 = 610
610 = 610

Use the given information to make equations:
(1) 8 + q = n
(2) .05n + .25q = 6.10
Now rearrange (1), and plug it into (2):
q = n - 8
.05n + .25(n - 8) = 6.10
.05n + .25n - 2 = 6.10
.3n = 8.10
n = 27 (This means Brent has 27 nickels)
8 + q = n
8 + q = 27
q = 19 (This means Brent has 19 quarters)

question doesn't work. The nickels would have to be an odd number or the total would have to end in 5. Eight nickels is 40 cents. take two nickels away and you are down to $6.00. you are left with six nickels or 30 cents which when subtracted from $6.00 leaves you $5.70 which can't divided by 25 evenly.

(8 + N) = Q
(0.05 N + 0.25 Q) + 0.40 = 6.10
The 0.40 is the 8 Nickles more than the Quarters...
N = How many Nickles you have
Q = How many Quarters you have
