A unit of distance called a mile was first used by the Romans and originally denoted a distance of 1,000 (double) steps (mille passuum in Latin), which amounted, at approximately 29 inches (0.74 m) per (single) step, to 1,618 yards (1,480 m), or 5,000 Roman feet, per mile.

A statute of the English parliament during the reign of Elizabeth I established the statute mile as eight furlongs or 1,760 yards; that is, 5,280 feet or 63,360 inches

The U.S. survey mile is based on an inch defined by 1 metre = 39.37 inches exactly. It is equal to 5,280 U.S. survey feet, 6,336/3,937 km or approximately 1,609.347 metres

Good luck

Depends on how farm apart each step is. The odds of walking for a mile moe than once with the same exact number of steps are very close to impossible. Also, If yuo are 5'2" and I am 6"2"", i will do it with fewer staps than you will unless uyuo have a really UNUASUALLY long stride.

For me, about 1750, give or take around 50.

Way to go teach for not answering the question !!

As a substitute teacher, I watched a video called "Supersize Me." Not that I recommend its more graphic content, mind you.
The average person takes about 1300 steps a day, and that's about one mile.

The average New Yorker, in NYC (Manhattan) has no car and walks a lot more. They're at about 4-5 miles a day!

And obesity is nowhere near the problem for that city as suburbia or the most of the rest of America, by the way.

Walk on!

5280 ft.
1760 yards
5280/2.5 feet = 30 inches = 1 pace

5280/2.5 = 2112 paces = steps in a mile

Walking or running? Short or long legs?? Walk about 20 normal steps and measure how far you went, then do a simple sum, or put the result on here.

Anyway there will be ABOUT 2350!

Starryeye.. They must have really long legs in NY, that equates to about a 4' stride!!!

Depends on how long your stride is. Divide the inches in a mile by the inches in your step and you have your answer.

It would all depend on the length of your stride. If you have a long stride, there would be fewer steps in a mile.

It depends how big (or small) are your steps.

1Mile = 1760 yards or
5280 feet
1 yard = 3feet.
