and have 8 hrs to our selves. Given a "normal" schedule. I think this is strange. It is so evenly broken up. Though some would disagree because of commuting times, which I have a long one too. Do you think car time to and from work is work? Do you think lunch is personal time or not? How do we get it all done? I would also be interested to know who thinks time in the car is a waste, because you can’t really use that time to do anything? I would just like to know other's thoughts on this matter. Thank you!! :)

I find that fascinating, I never really thought of it like that, but it makes a lot of sense, to evenly distribute yourself so you arent bogged down or overwhelmed to the point of no control (you would think, but it still happens!) I count driving to school/work and back counts as being at school or work in those hours because you have a mission, that purpose is to go there, and the purpose is to leave from there. Lunch is a tricky question, it CAN be personal time is leaving the job place, but at work, you are most likely still thinking and feeling you are at work.

I think driving in my car at times can be very stressful, and that is in the rush hour hours of the day when going to school/work or coming home at the same time is very stressful, and makes me look forward to my personal time. Some people enjoy the time just driving, but I find driving anywhere extremely stressful right now and less than pleasurable because of fluxuating gas prices, and I am a college girl in debt big time....so I always worry about when to fill up and how much it will cost. i believe it depends on the person.

Yes, quite odd how things seem to be evenly broken up, but that's just a general since. It's general because rarely do people get an actual 8 hours of sleep or 8 hours to themselves. Time in a car is not necessarily a waste because it's taking you somewhere.

Northern Sun Poster Collective in Minneapolis has a tshirt about this.
I consider my commute to work as "work". I think of lunch as "work" because mentally I haven't really separated and am not really "free".
To "get it all done" I go home, have a goal for what project I'm going to do, and then force myself to work on it for a set amount of time.
Car time isn't always a waste, long car drives give me time to decompress and be alone listening to music.

most people only work 5 days a week, but you sleep every day and have more free time on the weekend. So, not as evenly distributed as you might think...also, during the week, there are so many more things that aren't entirely free time...you have to take care of kids, or get dressed, or clean or do your bills or whatever.....it is very interesting how people manage though.

I like to listen to audio book in the car. I enjoy self help books and feel the time I spend reading or listening to them is not wasted. Lunch is not personal time... you are still probably not where you would be if it was your time. Balance happens in life naturally. One way or the other... even if things seem terribly off balance at times... there is a counterweight at work. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I consider travel time "work" because it needs to be done in order to acheive "work". So I usually tell people I work 11 hours a day, 9 directly and 2 indirectly. So that means I have 5 hours to myself.

Interesting question... I don't really know the answer. I do know that I count my commute time as work, because it's time that I can't use the time to do other non-work things.

I think I have personal times at work too, unless the boss is watching ;)

Yes...we are ruled by the clock, but the only ones free enough to do what they want when they want are the filthy rich or hobos.
