My doctor told me to start feeding my son solid foods when he was 4 months if on formula and 6 months if he's breastfed. My son is breastfed and now 6 and a half months....so we've just started food. They suggest starting with rice cereal mixed with formula/breastmilk.... my kid HATED that....so now we're on Gerber Oatmeal with bananas....I either mix it with breastmilk or pear juice (doc said that was fine) and just in the past few days I've added some gerber applesauce to it.

Its something you should speak with your babys doctor about. I have known a lot of people who start their baby off on cearal and such at 4 months. Don't ever feed her anything but milk, water or juice in a bottle. People like to poke the holes out in nipples and feed babies cereal from bottles. Solid food is ment to be taken off a spoon, its a totally different experience and movement of the mouth. If your doctor says its okay, or if you feel she is ready then start off slow. Only introduce one new thing at a time. You don't want to give her two new things on the same day or within the same couple days because if she has a reaction you won't have any idea which it was. Plain ceral is a good start and maybe some applesauce. Look in the baby food isle and get only the stage one stuff.

Start with the basic fruit and veggie. No combinations yet...
I started my daughter on babyfood when she was about 5 1/2 months old. Gradually work in veggies after a few weeks of fruit. Different colors means a variety of nutrients. it takes at least 10 tries to get a baby to like a certain fruit or veggie.
Good luck!

Babies can start having baby food between 4-6 months. Usually you start with rice cereal (you buy this in the baby food aisle) and then move on to First Foods vegetables and fruits.

I started rice cereal a little after 4 months, I felt he was ready. I asked my doctor and she said that it was fine. He is almost 6 months now, and has rice or oatmeal cereal in the morning, breastfeeds during the day, and has a package of Gerber 2nd foods at night.

Usually they recommend starting at 6 months to avoid food allergies. Start slowly one food at a time. Start with rice cereal then fruits then move to vegetables then meats later.

The AAP suggests starting around 6 mos of age. Starting earlier can increase baby's chance of allergies, diabetes and obesity. The best first foods are bananas, avocados and sweet potatoes (pre LLL).

You can start giving her cereal usually between 4-6 months, starting with rice cereal first, and then trying oat, barley, wheat etc. Vegetables and fruit can be introduced after 6 months.
This site will give you some great info on what foods to feed your baby, and at what stage to introduce them. http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09358.html

At 4 months you start them on cereal. I always mixed it with their formula, and make it slightly thin or your baby will gag on it. Also, always feed your baby with a spoon. It takes them awhile before they learn to push the food to the back of their mouth and swallow, so don't get discouraged. They will try pushing it in with their hands and make a mess.
At 6 months you begin single fruits and veggies, but only start one food color a week. For example, you can try them on yellow veggies like carrots and squash in one week. If they have no allergic reactions, you can begin another color group.
