We usually use the conversion of 1.6 km per mile. You just need to multiply:
5 miles * 1.6 km/mile = 8 km
If you have to get more accurate, there are actually 1.609344 km/mile. So you'd have:
5 miles * 1.609344 km/mile = 8.04672 km

Hiya, the general accepted approximation is that 1km=5/8 mile.
So by multiplying both sides of the equation by 8 gives :-
8km=40/8 miles
therefore 8km= 5 miles.

Oh dear, it is within your conversion tables in a small diary or whatever, but if you really need help in this department, just call a km 0.6 of a mile.
