A dormant volcano no longer erupts regularly but has lava in the batholith and is capable of erupting. An extinct volcano contains no magma and the batholith has hardened. It cannot erupt.

its called a dormant volcano if it has been inactive for along time, but still may have a slight chance of erupting at some point in the future. If absolutely not going to erupt ever again it is a dead volcano

A dormant volcano is one that could erupt, but just doesn't feel like doing it at the moment.
One that cannot erupt again (like the one Edinburgh Castle is built on - the lava has cooled and turned to granite) is called extinct.
