A few kids started a small food fight and the whole 8th grade got punished. We haven't had privilages (slushies, vending machines, pizza bar on Friday, ability to go outside) for about two weeks. They have started to slowly give us our privilages back, but there is one group of kids who still won't behave. Also, our principal thinks putting your arm around your bf/gf or holding hands with them is too much P.D.A. The same thing happened last year in middle school when there was a fight. The old principal moved up to the high school when the old one left. Our principal and especially our V.P. won't let us slightly bend the rules and when a few people break a rule, everyone is punished. Is that too harsh?

For 8th grade not so much. I'm in tenth grade so I know kind of how you feel. When I was 7th grade, we were supposed to have an end of the year feild trip to frost valley but because of the kids who went before us and misbehaved, my entire school is now banned from frost valley. I went to our middle school last week and my bf put his arm around my shoulder and the VP almost had an aneurysm, which I thought was pretty funny... but anyway once you get to High School, that wont matter much anymore because they relax the rules alittle bit in high school. but for the food fight, i think the punishment was totally fair. it makes students not want to misbehave again.

If others were cheering the food fight on, even if they were not involved, then this is one way to punish those students as well. The most likely reason is psychology. Peer pressure is more effective in behavior control than merely punishing the few kids that had the food fight. Because everyone got in trouble for the actions of the few, the other kids will be mad at the principle, but more importantly they will be mad at the kids that got them in trouble. In the future, they will put pressure on those few kids to behave so the rest do not get into trouble.

Its not that harsh rules are made for a reason and they shouldn't be broken. If there is a group of students causing the problems then the principal should get those students and not punish the whole class that is unfair. The issue with holding hands in the hallway i agree with you are to young to be holding hands besides your hands should be filled with books. LoL

To a child your age it seems extreme to punish everyone, but that's the only good way to teach the unteachable. If everyone suffers the few causing the problem will get tired of feeling the heat from everyone else and then hopefully will start acting right. If they don't, try and make the best of it and be the better and bigger person and just do the right thing and go on with your life. Life is short and drama wastes too much of your time. Just focus on what you can do to make you the best you you can be.

It is harsh... but in a way he could discipline kids. Sometimes you need to be harsh. Its the way principals should be. It is also a story to tell when you grow older.

Unfortunately it sounds alot like the "real" world. Get used to it now.
Is the principal wrong? Maybe.
But sometimes in group situations you need to be overbearing in order to keep people in check. Especially if there are people who refuse to behave.

Not to harsh at all. You're lucky you didn't got to Catholic school where the Nun's would whoop your behind if you made fun of one of your fellow students. be glad you didn't have to go to school back in the day!
