My friend's baby is 1 week old exactly & she does not want to latch on. She developed jaundice also. The nurses at the hospital said that she needs something so they recommended that she pump & feed it to her in the bottle. Now she is concerned there will be nipple confusion & that the baby might not go back to the breast. She is having a hard time due to wanting to breastfeed straight from the breast, but this is the only way to get her fed.
Will she be able to go back & forth with the breast & the bottle without nipple confusion?

I fed a combination of breast and bottle with my first child. They can adapt. At that age, they are still open to anything that gets them food.

The harder thing for them to take is when you switch from only breast milk, to formula. That can be a shocker for them.

Buy the closest nipple for the bottle that resembles the natural breast. Some of them look and feel just like the real breast. Never had the problem so I don't know, but hopefully the baby will. Have to feed the baby with the bottle for now. Good Luck

There are more ways to feed a baby than just a bottle. She could try giving the pumped milk with a spoon, a syringe, a medicine dropper, a cup, etc.

Sometimes, if a baby is jaundiced and sleepy, a quick "jump start" of a couple of swallows of pumped milk from a dropper, etc. can wake the baby up enough to get her latched on and nursing better.

Have her talk to the hospital's Lactation Consultant.

They say if you want to breast feed not to give the baby anything else but the breast for the first 6 weeks....But my son was in the hospital the first month of his life... He got the bottle and breast.. I guess it depends on the baby but if i was her i would not give the baby the bottle anymore, and soon she will latch right back on.

I never had a problem. When I was breast feeding I wanted my husband to be able to enjoy feeding the baby as well, so I altered pumping by breast for bottle feeding and also breast feeding as well. The baby will form a routine and habit.

Some babies can and some can't. Your friend just needs to remember that if she is pumping the breast milk she is giving her baby the best food she can. She should try to continue breastfeeding, but if it doesn't work out, she should continue to pump and not feel guilty about it. At least her baby is getting the breast milk. And she needs to relax when she tries to breastfeed. If she is stressed out about it, the baby will feel her stress and that might make it harder. Best of luck to her.

my daughter ate both breast and bottle, with no problems, there is really no way to tell until you try.... now this may sound funny but if you approach her like its not even a concern of yours she might just go with the flow. I have heard that babies feel what you feel, nervousness, happiness...etc...so tell her to be calm while dealing with the baby...it should come naturally...I know all children are different and I could be wrong but my daughter has started walking talking and drinking from her sippy cup and shes not even a year yet... I always approach her with a change as if it is not even a big deal..know what I mean? try it and hopefully it works....

She should stop the bottle for a while if she can.Yes there is nipple confusion cause the botle comes out more faster then the breast .Just tell her to keep giving her the breast the bottle avant it like breast if she has to use one.

She should go back. Her mother just needs to keep offering the breast.
