Most teething gels don't have any drugs in them as far as I know - Calgel certainly doesn't as I've been using this for my daughter. You can also try one of those teething rings with water in that you can put in the fridge - they seem to calm her down for a while. My health visitor recommends letting them chew on anything that's safe for as long as they want to, toys, teethers, muslin squares, even mum or dad's finger! Failing that, an occasional dose of infant paracetamol won't do any harm - I was reluctant to use it at first, but I decided it was kinder to give my baby the odd spoonful of Calpol than let her scream all night - she slept better and so was much less grumpy and miserable the next day. It's a matter of personal preference though, so if your baby doesn't seem to be in too much pain with his or her teeth just yet, then you might want to persevere with the teething gel for now. Good luck, and I hope you find something that works.

Hi, I understand that you're probably going though a really tough time at the moment because this is a really pain full and irritable time for your child.

It's really good that you want to stay away from medicine, even bonjela is a very temporary pain reliefe and the effect only last for a very short while.

The best natural remedy for this is cloves, this is what I have used on my two children and it has worked really well, the only down side is that is tastes horrid and your child will probably cry because of the taste but its best that they cry for a Short while because they don't like the taste of something rather than because they are in pain.

Just grind a few cloves down until they're powdered then mix with a tiny weeny bit of olive oil and rub on the gums it will numb it instantly and the effects will last longer than bonjela.

I hope this helps you - good luck.

Bonjela worked for my little one - also dried apple rings (again stay close, though they do take a lot of gumming). Teeny tiny sliver of ice helps too. Don't be afraid of dosing with the baby paracetamol if baby in pain - also baby nurofen (ibuprofen) may be ok to use as alternative if old enough(see doc or pharmacist - you may be able to alternate doses with paracetamol). Don't neglect yourself and sleep when baby sleeps. Forget house cleaning for a while and hope you're not at work but sleep sleep sleep whenever and wherever you can.

My son was like this he would always stare at me eating and cry, I finally gave him solids at 4 and a half months, he had good head control so I sat him in his snug chair and fed him two spoonfuls of baby porridge.. He didnt push the spoon out so I knew he was ready and proceeded to give him the food and he eat all of it (I waited a full 24 hours before trying him again) and he gradually had more and more He was also breastfed and I know he was ready for solids when I gave him some.. He is now 6 months and eats porridge of a morning mashed with puréed banana, has puréed fruit of a dinner and some puréed veg of a night and he is a very content and happy baby and spot on in his weight! Mums know best, as long as baby has good head control and can eat off a spoon not in the bottle like rusk (don't do that!) it's fine! Good luck x

1) bonjela - strawberry flavour, just for teething, suitable from 2 months
2) rub gently with fingers (this will encourage baby to bite and will soothe him/ her
3) buy him/her a rubber based toy to stimulate chewing and enable the tooth to break through the gum sooner.
Don't give paracetamol for this, you don't want to be drugging the baby 'unnecessarily'. Though I don't believe in suffering, this process can be a long one, and surely you don't want to feed him paracetamol for the next few weeks, several times a day.

dont be afraid to use paracetamol, i did with my son and he is absolutely fine ( plus it reduces their temperature). buy some of those teething rings (the ones you can stick in the fridge) these can help as they have something to bite down on. Also Ive heard about shaving a large piece of carrot and freezing it, stay close by though as although the carrot may be flexible you dont want any to break off. Buy a good nappy rash cream too, like zinc and caster oil from boots. my son got terrible nappy rash while teething! good luck. and remember it wont last forever xx xx

the only thing that worked on my son was Anbesol it is the same stuff that Dentists inject into your gums and it's FANTASTIC my son had teething pains from 7 weeks old and I know I would be a nervous wreck without it. It came recommended from my health visitor but I suggest you speak to your's before you try anything

There are many good products and ideas suggested here. Try any you haven't tried, my point here is at the moment i am cutting wisdom teeth, I am 38 and had three children and this pain hurts..you are expecting your baby to go through this without pain relief?
Make sure it is teething pain and please give the baby relief if it is.

even though teething is tough on a child it is best to let them come in without the drugs

if the baby starts running a fever of 101.0 then tylonel other than that just let them come in teething rings work great

good luck
