Once you get over the initial fear, sewing on a machine isn't difficult. You really should have the booklet - it shows you some important things, like how to thread the machine (it might also be printed on the machine), insert the bobbin, install the needle, adjust the thread and bobbin tension, troubleshoot various problems, etc. It also gives you info about the kind of needles and bobbins you need (no, they aren't all the same). Since it's a new machine, first go to the manufacturer's website and see if they have it available for download. If not, try e-mailing them and asking for one. If that doesn't work, try posting a request on a sewing message board. There might even be a group for that particular model of sewing machine, and the people there could help you.

As far as learning to sew, can your mom show you? I know that doesn't always work well - I love my mom, but I was 30 before I could take "lessons" from her. You could also try another relative or friend who sews. If that doesn't work, check if there are any classes in your area, either through a local sewing shop, a craft store, or a community college. Finally, try the internet or books. There are some sites below that could help. Try signing up for a Yahoo Group - there are many out there, and it helps to talk to a bunch of people when you have questions or ideas.

It depends on the model and the age of the sewing machine. Start by looking on eBay for a manual for the make and model sewing machine (it should say what it is right on the outside of the machine). If the machine is older than a year or two, take it to a sewing machine repair place and have it cleaned and serviced. (Local fabric stores can tell you where to take it - or sometimes they have a repair person that comes to their store monthly to do repairs for customers). This may sound like an unnecessary expense, but it's not. Old machines, machines that haven't been used in a while, or machines that have been used a lot will have parts wear, need oiling, and may have other problems that only get worse with use. Trust me, I have been there!

If you can't find a manual on eBay, contact the manufacturer, who may be able to send you one or direct you to an online manual. If there's no way to get a manual, have your mom, another sewing relative, or a friend show you the basics. Once you get started it is really easy to pick up the rest.

Sewing is simple - you just don't want to mess up the machine by making the wrong mistake. For instance, you need to know how to load the bobbin properly, how to thread the machine, how to switch between stitch types.

Sewing also opens up a whole world of crafting opportunities! You can use it for clothing, quilting, curtains (BIG money-saver), and even scrapbooking. Have fun!

The first thing you need to learn how to do is thread it. Most new machines have numbers to follow, but if yours doesn't, i suggest getting a permanent marker, and marking where the thread should go, then, once you've got it threaded, get some papers and draw squares and circles and other shapes, including wiggly lines, then follow he lines you've drawn until you get the basics on how to make turns, sew straight lines etc. Then try something simple like a pillow case, or apron, you will get the hang of it in no time, then, just have fun!
