I live in a small town about 30 miles east of Springfield, Ma. In my high school, we house grades 8 - 12. If you miss behave you get sent to T.O.R. (time out room). One of the 8th graders has to eat lunch in there. Yesterday, she decided not to. When the police officer tried to escort her back to class, she told him and our principal to f*** off. She got arrested, had to go to juvinile court, spent about 2 hours in juvie, and got suspened for 2 days. Is that punishment to harsh? Shouldn't people be worried about things like a school shooting, not about swearing?

Yes, you are actually right. That kind of policy is called "zero tolerance." It is an attempt to enforce the adult "crime and punishment" model on school age children who have had little exposure to the real world. Educational literature is filled with studies that show these "zero tolerance" schools don't work and actually harm children's educational development, but demands from the community keep them from changing policy. I went to a school like that and hated it.

My advice is to keep your nose clean and when you get out of school try not to be cynical. When you have your own kids, work to change the school's policy and work to change the community.

I do think your school is going a little bit too far. Myabe they are too afraid though if they don't be that strict there will be a shooting, what they dont realize is things like what they are ding is what causes school shootings!!!
