I get it. But I need an explanation to share with someone. Last night somebody told my BF a racist joke. I asked that person to keep his jokes to himself when I'm around and walked away. My BF laughed at the joke & continued talking to him. Later, the same person made a derogatory comment about Mexicans. I said my daughter is 1/2 Mexican. He said, "Which half?" I ignored him & he left.

My BF didn't get why I was upset. I tried to explain it & I consider myself to be pretty eloquent, but he didn't get it. He kept saying, "It's only a joke." & "So there shouldn't be any blonde jokes? Jokes about anything??" (The ignorance here is killing me.) Then he asked an interesting question - "Is it okay to laugh at a racist joke if someone of that race is telling the joke? But I shouldn't laugh if the person telling it is not of the race mentioned? What if I don't know the person's race? What then? Do I laugh?"

I care very much for my BF & want to work this out if we can. But how? Help.

acknowledging there are differences is better than pretending there aren't any at all...if we can have pride in our heritage..how about being able to poke fun at it too?..some stand up comedians make a living making racist jokes...if they couldn't Carlos Mencia would be homeless...

laugh at whats funny..you shouldn't have to think about..oh no..is it politically correct to laugh? you just need to lighten up

oh wow..these people..saying you should leave your BF over a joke..maybe that's why the divorce rate is so high...they give up on a commitment over a petty thing

This can be a pretty "deep" discussion but I will keep it short. There is a fine line & I know what you mean. I try to consider the source. If the person is mean-spirited & seems to be telling the joke simly to put down another race, then I speak up, If the person seems to be fun-loving & likes comedy or making people laugh, then I laugh along (if it's funny).

if you cant laugh at the joke its only because its about your race. are you polish? and sick of always being the but of the joke. well then convert to jewish religeon ...well that ones not a whole lot better as far as jokes are concerened
maybe you should lighten up its ok to laugh at yourself if everyone would just laugh at thier own flaws theyre would have probably been a lot less war to write about in our history books

Speak up and show your disgust in this person. As far as you BF goes, if he can't be sensitive to your feeling, as GREAT as he might seem, maybe he is not the one. These should be NO Room for hate in his heart!
