I bought 2 cast iron griddles from Macy's (Tools of The Trade). One of them I used, I guess I went wrong somewhere, it started rusting. I have another left - but I didn't expect it to happen this way especially since I tried taking care of it.

I haven't begun using the second one, still new. What's the FIRST thing I should do? What is the correct way of seasoning it?

What do I do after EVERY use? Cleaning tools and tips? Please help, I don't want this gone too!

Before I forget - The first 1-2 times i did NOT remove the crust, but then everytime I cooked it would leave black liquid on the new food... and the crust would NOT remove, it stuck pretty good. I used vingar and salt, still no luck.

one way is to coat it with cooking oil and bake it in an oven...another old time way is to cover it with lard and throw it into a hot fire...you want that black coating in it...it's called curing cast iron...dont scrape the black away...thats what keeps the moisture from getting to the metal and rusting it....clean with a mild soap and water and dont use a scratch pad...

I have 2 case iron pans. I love them! You just need to season them. Once they are seasoned NOTHING will stick to them. All you need to do is: Put the pan on the stove, get it nice and hot sprinkle about 2 tables spoons of salt in it. Then put about 1 table spoon of cooking oil. Take a wad of paper towels and scrub the pan. Do this EVER time you wash the pan. Also never soak these pans in water. Oh a trick my mom does is she sprays the pan with cooking spray, sprinkles the salt in and scrubs it with the towels. Once the pan is REALLY seasoned you wont need the salt just the oil. Also that is the proper way to dry them as well. No rust that way.

the way i took care of my cast iron frying pan was to wash it w/soap and water, dry it on the stove on a lowish heat, then i rub cooking oil onto it real good, put back on low heat and wipe excess oil off. taking care of mine that way i was able to use it for many many years. good luck :)

turn ur oven on 500 deg coat with lard and let her smoke.....really! then take out and let cool and light coat with lard and store.....coat again about every other time
