1936 Berlin games, Leni Riefenstahl filmed a two-part documentary called Olympia. It was the first time the Games were seen with a moving image. 1936 was also the first year that the Summer Olympics were shown on television in some form. Twenty-five large screens were set up in Berlin allowing people to watch the Games for free.
The first Winter Games to be televised also took place in 1956 in Cortina. The first telecast of the Olympics in the United States was in 1960.

The 1948 London Games were the first to be shown on home television, although very few people in Great Britain actually owned sets.
The 1960 Rome Games were broadcast live by more than 100 television channels and with recorded broadcasts in 18 European countries, and a time-lag to the United States, Canada and Japan.
