Of course I'm appalled... but that's the ACLU. Their origins were sound and reasonable... but they have crossed into areas that are amusing/appalling !!
The ACLU will defend anyones right to their interpretation of "free-speech": the Klan, White Supremicists, Islamic Terrorists...
Then again... it's nice to have a counter to the Religious Right who wish to ban: Harry Potter books, Catcher in the Rye, etc.

That's the funy thing about the law ... even people and organizations you dislike still have rights.
The issue at hand was basically Freedom of Speech. They are NOT defending the organizations viewpoint or practices ... they are defending their right to free speech.
Freedom of Speech is not something that should be applied only to people whom you agree with. The law applies to everyone ... not just people you like.
Your question grossly misrepresents the situation. If an uninformed person were to read your question, they would incorrectly assume that the ACLU is defending the sexual practices of NAMBLA members. They are not.

How can you write that entire paragraph without even explaining what the case is about or at least where people can find more information? The case is about the family of an abuse victim suing NAMBLA for promoting behavior that led to the assault. What the ACLU is fighting is the idea that an organization can be sued for the actions of one of its members. It's a fight worth having because it could affect groups like, for example, the NRA. If this family wins in New York then the family of a gun shot murder victim could sue the NRA for encouraging gun ownership and endangering their loved one.
People need to see the complete picture when it comes to an issue like this and have a knee jerk emotional response. NAMBLA is gross but as I've said this goes beyond NAMBLA.

Apparently, you have mis-stated your position. You obviously do not "agree with the rights of people" unless you agree with those people. The ACLU is not defending purpose or intent of the organization. They are specifically defending the First Amendment rights of the organization and only those rights.

Agreed with all of the above answers, but at this point in my time as an American citizen, nothing really appalls me, simply because I have been desensitized to such behaviors and views due to their becoming almost commonplace in our nation.
For conservatives or even just for people in this country with any moral values at all, it has become a lose-lose situation - you lose if you fight against the liberal/pro-choice lawmakers or lobby groups because they have more money and personal connections, and you lose if you compromise your values and beliefs by allowing them to pass some of their laws next to some of your laws.
If we accepted the controlled murder of Terri Schiavo last year, we will eventually allow any other dehumanizing behaviors.
Our country is indeed sliding down a slippery moral slope.

Yes, completely appalled. By the way it is NAMBLA, North American Man Boy Love Association. You might be surprised that American poet Alan Ginsburg was a card carrying member of this group of perverts. The ACLU will represent any scum looking to hide behind the first amendment. Quit donating money to this group. These are the same idiots who fought for convicted felons right to worship Satan in prison. Freedom of religion.

I am. I think it is outrageous that they would come to their defense. And I don't think their is any way that this country would accept sex between a minor and an adult. With all the injustices in this country, you would think the ACLU could find a decent cause to take up.

The ACLU is only defending their right to advocate such sex, not to break the law. Advocacy is speech.
People who say things everyone agrees with don't need legal protection. It is people who say things that practically no one agrees with who need protection. Only by defending the most despicable speech can we assure that ALL speech is protected.

Hmmm, I wonder if the ACLU would defend a group advocating the legalization of Rape/Armed Robbery/Murder/Kidnapping.
How are those different than what NAMBLA advocates?
Sexual contact with children has been taboo since the dawn of civilization.

You're right, it is sick.
But do this, O.K?
Send a Christmas card to the ACLU?
The address is:
125 Broad St.
18th floor
New York, NY 10004
It's worth the 39 cents to freeze their operation, because they will be opening them all looking for a donation.
Send a nice religious one, like with the navity on it or something.
Who knows, maybe they will have a change of heart!!
Also, if you are Christian, why would you send a card with "Happy Holidays" on it? To a jewish friend, I send a jewish card, etc.....
