Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the name for a condition that results from the mother drinking when she is pregnant. Basically what happens, is that the alcohol in the mother's bloodstream is passed to the fetus, and has terrible affects on the development of the baby. During the first and second trimester it has the worst effect, as that is when the baby is developing. It can result in physical defects, such as deafness, or mental defects, such as retardation. We have two FES grandchildren who were adopted, and it was truly tragic as in the early stages the children appeared quite normal. As they grew, it rapidly became clear that they were not. They are lovely children, but will never become mature adults. Just oversized children. They have great difficulty with school work, as one of the problems is they can learn something one day and forget it the next, so where the average child learns something and builds on it, with these children you go over and over the same things and move forward in microscropic steps.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is so easily prevented. Simply saying 'no' to alcohol during pregnancy is all it takes. But sometimes a woman can be affected very early on, when she doesn't even realize she is pregnant.

both of my adopted children have fetal alcohol syndrome and drug exposure, as do the other 6 siblings from this mother. It is truly debilitating and there is no cure. It causes neurological deficits and many autistic type tendencies. One of the worst problems is that the part of the brain that makes the connection between cause and effect is severely damaged. They will continually do something that will get them in trouble and never learn from the consequences. They also commonly have ADHD and very little impulse control. 85% will never live an independent life as an adult.

A woman who drinks alcohol during pregnancy can cause irreperable damage to her unborn baby. The severity of the symptoms (which can include brain damage) depend on the amount of alcohol consumed. Babies born with these symptoms are said to be victims of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.

I believe its when the mother of an unborn child drinks alcohol and because the mother's blood is shared with the baby, the baby has alcohol too. It's not a good thing though and can lead to the babies death or deformities.
