only The Little Mermaid, a statue in Copenhagen honoring Hans Christian Andersen.
A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish. The male version of a mermaid is called a merman; the gender-neutral collective noun is merfolk. Various cultures throughout the world have similar figures. They were known to sing sailors to their deaths, like the Siren, or squeeze the life out of drowning men, while trying to rescue them.
The Sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore as mermaids; in fact in some languages the name sirena is used interchangeably for both creatures. Other related types of mythical or legendary creature are water fairies (e.g. various water nymphs) and selkies.

I believe they do. I have spent most of my life going to sea.
I always warned my skippers that if they witnessed me diving over the side it would mean I saw a mermaid and am joining her, and for them to not even bother slowing down the ship, coming about or attempt any rescue.
I still hope that day will come!

No, the myth of mermaids started during the sailing days, when, after having been at sea for weeks, sailors would see manatees or dugongs, which have breasts like a woman, and to a sex starved sailor, appear to be half fish and half woman.

Don't know, but sails have thought about dolphins and such as mermaids. Also a new study shows that we have a lot of DNA and such that are shared with dolphins.

Alas Santiago, it would appear they didn't, but were fishermen describing manatees and dolphins. Shame though, they would probably have been nice people to know, if they had existed.
