Fear is an emotion that releases the hormone adrelinine in the human body. No normal human being derives any pleasure from real and absolute fear. Secondry fear, if thats what one may call, is something that many of us are guilty of taking pleausre in wading in. Horror movies tap into the fears of the human race.Besides being afraid of the unknown, the dark and the strange we are afraid of old age, of the devil, of loneliness, of being different. Horror movies is a window that looks into our fears. Horror movies allow us to venture into the unknown. When you are watching a scary movie the greatest part of your subconcience knows that what you are watching is nothing more than absolute fiction. The rush that we feel when the music changes- which plays a major role in channeling our senses into that feeling of fear- is what makes us clinch, shut our eyes, and yet want to still watch on. The suspense that comes hand in hand with fear in a horror movie is another thing that makes us want to watch on. The atmosphere that surrounds a horror movie is extremely alluring. Whats going to happen next? What is it that is lurking in the dark? it makes u sit at the edge of your seat and want to advice the victim on what to do next. Fear makes our hearts begin to beat faster, it sends our minds into a state of shock.
One of my favourite horror movie was the ring, but as i havnt watched too many horror films I cannot call it the best horror film of all time. The ring involves a little child, and children as we know are the epitome of inocence, but with the ring this is not the case. The psycology behind the movie is amazing, and everything from the sound effects, to the use of color, the ring delivers horror perfectly. Saw 1 is a perfect example of horror as right on through till the end we are shown the unexpected.
Horror films are made to elict fear, and weather this be a good thing or bad thing you be the judge. I used to be a fan of horror but Iv grown out of it and would chose a comedy anyday.

I think you're tryin to get that scary feeling you had whn you were young. Not alot of films can get people to be scared like that.
My personal favorite that bought back that "childhood scary feeling"
"The Blair Witch Project"
Hope this helps.
