So Mysterious, Yet So Beautiful
THIS time of the year, the night sky beckons with bejeweled splendor. High overhead strides mighty Orion, easily visible on January evenings from Anchorage, Alaska, to Cape Town, South Africa. Have you had a good look recently at the celestial treasures to be found in well-known constellations, such as Orion? Astronomers took a peek not long ago using the recently repaired Hubble Space Telescope.
From the three stars of Orion's belt dangles his sword. The fuzzy star in the middle of the sword is not really a star at all but the famous Orion Nebula, an object of striking beauty even when seen through a backyard telescope. Its ethereal glow, however, is not the secret of its fascination for professional astronomers.

Beauty is not always an objective thing. Remember that throughout MOST of recorded history, fatter people were considered more beautiful, mostly because most people couldn't afford to eat enough to make them fat, so if you were fat it usually meant that you were wealthy!! It has only been within the last 100 years that our society considered thin attractive, because we are wealthy enough as a country that even the lower classes are well fed!!
Science suggests that through the ages the one constant of what humans consider beautiful is SYMETTRY. The more symmetrical someone's facial and body features, the more beautiful most people would say they are, fat or thin. The more symmetrical flowers are considered more beautiful. We also like bright colors and lights. The universe is considered beautiful because you are obsessed with bight colors and lights. It is also beautiful due to the exetential value, i.e., the less you know about something, the more mystery it contains, the more you think about it and wonder about it, the more beautiful it is :)
After all, aren't most men and women much more attractive when you know nothing about them and much less attractive once you get to know them :) Point being, the fantasy value definately enhances attractiveness :)
p.s., most pictures of the universe are taken through various filters, to bring out certain attributes, and they don't look like that to the naked eye. For example, they may shoot a nebula though a filter that only allows red light to come through, so even though the nebula is just black and white to the naked eye, the picture is a brilliant shiny red :) Only about 25% of the pics out there are the true naked eye colors of the objects!!

Simple - Evolution.
We have evolved to see beauty in the things around us. This has been an abstract bi product of evolution to maintain our sanity. If we see beauty everywhere it can preserve out sanity.
There is nothing beautiful about the universe, our brains just see it this way.

Edited highlights mainly, most of the images are rather less intresting. The colours are the result of gas ionisation, reds are hydrogen, greens are oxygen.
The randomness forms incredible complexity which is fascinating.

Those pictures inspire mankind to find a way to leave this rock we call home and head out into the universe to see it for ourselves, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no one has gone before...!
Sorry, got carried away.

Can you imagine a universe you would fine ugly? I bet you can't. It just inspires your sense of wonder, and that's why you find it beautiful. It's a normal physical reaction.
