I am studying Philosophy and it's one of the sciences that you must give its due respect because all other studies we do like; physics, mathematics, etc are from philosophy, so my dear friend according to the definition given to us by our lecturer: PHILOSOPHY IS THE STUDY OF ALL KNOWABLES IN THEIR ULTIMATE CAUSES THROUGH THE LIGHT OF NATURAL REASONING. If you find this hard to accept read any book that introduces you to philosophy or inquire among those you know to have study philosophy. Then you will find for yourself why the category is here. The question you asked its like saying why do we breath or need oxygen or simply why the category of family is here? Consider this statement " Why is there anything rather than nothing". Good luck I hope this is a sufficient answer for you.

If you think people miss use this category, take a peep at the immigration category. Mostly, I think some of these categories become hangouts for groups of people and the category's name is just a general idea of what to expect.

However, I have seen some very educational philosophy questions & answers here and have learned a few interesting stuff. Mostly, I think these are questions made by college students trying to get something that wasn't clear to them.

For us to ponder what is, what might have been ,and what is.

We are on a voyage to find that which has falling in the forest and makes no sound are makes a sound that we can not hear since we are not in the forest.

Who says life has no meaning as we ponder the meaning of life.

Does God actually exist or is the Devil his son? Who know the answer to the question never ask.

That my dear man is the reason for this category to Ponder that which we do no understand and that which we need to make light of who know this category may not even exist

Philosophy attracts two kinds: real brains (who will show you a paper they paid good money for, saying they are real brains, to prove it) and philistines who say "ehhh, that's a fraud" to everything.

It's like a match thrown in gasoline, the marriage between these two types. Real big fun.

Philosphy is the true mechanics of how we actually live our lives. Far deeper than just manipulating your way into some hussy. Its addresses the many motives and facets of the Human experience.
