Be firm!!!!!! Don't let the students take over. You are the adult, and the one in charge. Check with the office on the misconduct rules and stick to them. Whatever you say make sure you can back it up. Once the students know that you mean business it will get easier for you. Come in very strong, and don't be intimidated by the little darlings!!!! Good Luck!!!!

When I was a sub, I only worked for secondary schools because I knew my limitations with "little fellers." Find out what classes you might teach and every time you are at a school, ask teachers for worksheets - NOT "busy work" but something that is actually valuable to students - something that is difficult enough to maybe encourage their "regular" teacher to give them extra credit for doing it in the first place.
Find some puzzles that promote "lateral thinking" or "critical thinking" that you can make into worksheets or put on overhead acetate for whole-class use.
Make sure you know where the teacher's plans are. If you read them and don't understand what you're supposed to do, ask another teacher who knows the teacher you're subbing for. At least ask someone who teaches the same subject.
Be sure you know the teacher's schedule - homeroom, planning period, etc. Know where the bathroom, teacher's workroom, etc. are - know lunch procudures as well as fire drills, etc.

Do NOT go in and try to be their friend!! You need a plan. Most teachers will leave you exactly what to do. Do it, and they will want you to come back. Don't, and they will request that you not sub for them again. Know the principals and assistant principals, and make sure that you make contact with a teacher close by. You can ask them questions if you get stumped.
Good luck!
And don't believe the students when they tell you "We don't usually do that" or "Mr.?Mrs. So-and-so doesn't do it that way". Calmy remind them that this is what you were told to do, so they will do it that way while you are there. And that you are not "Mr/Mrs. So-and-so"

Establish a good relationship is the first thing. Tell the students you have heard they are a great class and you are looking forward to working with them. This makes it harder for them to be bad, in theory.
As soon as someone does something inappropriate, address it with them quietly, and thank them when they behave. Always try to be positive.
Trust yourself.
good luck

Don't be their friend. If one or a group of individuals are becoming unruly send them to the princepal/dean/ or who ever handles the bad behavior in the school.

You have to let them know that your in charge
although you don't want to be to hard them or they wont respect you. Just let them know what your rules are give them their work the teacher left and then when their done let them talk but not to loud. I always liked those kind of subs.
