If money WASN'T an issue, and I'm planning to major in the humanities, which is better? I'm not really referring to HYP here, but Ivies like Cornell, Brown, and Columbia.

Which has the better reputation?

I'm a west coaster, so I don't hear much about the east coast colleges. All I hear about is Berkeley and Stanford.

On the undergraduate level, the Ivy League schools are slightly better than Berkeley in the Arts. Berkeley dominates in the Sciences. Wharton (Penn) has the best undergraduate business program n the country -- but Berkeley isn't far behind at #3 (MIT is #2).

For graduate school, Berkeley actually dominates most of the Ivies. This is in part because Berkeley is near the top in engineering, while most of the Ives fall behind. In the arts, Berkeley holds its own. It is actually rated #1 in many fields -- including English Literature.

In other words, they are similar in quality of education.

Your choice should be made on other factors. One is that you are a West Coaster -- living in the East for a few years may do you some good.

That being said, the Ivies offer very different choices.

Penn is in the middle of Philadelphia -- but has a nice campus.

Princeton is in an Ex-Urb half way between NYC and Philadelphia and has one of the most beautiful campuses I've ever seen.

Columbia is a very urban campus in NYC.

Yale has a nice campus -- but is in New Haven -- which I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Brown is the funkiest of the Ivies -- and in Providence.

Cornell is an excellent school. Cornell grads seem to work hard -- perhaps to prove they belong in the Ivies. But Ithica is in the middle of nowhere.

Harvard has a nice campus in Cambridge. Technically, it is a suburbb of Boston, but it is more like part of the city. Boston is a very livable town.

Dartmouth is in a small town on the Vermont-New Hampshire border. It is an excellent school, and has an incredibly beautiful campus. Fall at Dartmouth is an incredible display of colors.

Berkeley has a nice campus for a State School. The eucalyptus grove is incredible. The town of Berkeley is a horrid place -- with a homeless problem worse than NYC during the Reagan years (and I thought nothing could be worse). It is hard to find a restaurant in the town that doesn't out cilantro in the food (and I hate the stuff).

Another factor to consider is size. Berkeley's undergraduate population is twice the largest of the Ivies (Penn and Cornell) and five times as large as the typical Ivy League school. For me, this might be the determining factor in picking one of them.

If you are considering these private schools -- you might want to add Duke, University of Chicago and Northwestern to your list (I assume you've already included Stanford).

If you are considering high quality state schools like UC-Berkeley, then others you could consider are U of VA, U of MI, UNC and UCLA.

-----------------------------
Someone above said that Cornell is a SUNY school. This is not really true. Cornell is a Land Grant University. Half of the school (the Ag school and the Engineering School) is supported by public funds, and tuitions are lowered. But the rest of the university (including the Liberal Arts -- where you would be) are completely private. It is an odd school.

These are all very strong universities, with great humanities programs. Their reputations are stellar. But if you're in-state California, you get a majorly good deal, attending UCal Berkeley. Fabulous education for in-state tuition. Top 10 school. Really can't beat it.

Beyond cost - as you said, "if money WASN'T an issue":

Cornell, of all the Ivy's, is the least known. Because of that, they have a slightly higher admit rate, and perhaps a slight bit less name-prestige, than the other Ivys.

Out of all the Ivys, the one that tends to have the most prestigious name worldwide is Harvard.

Other than that, I'd pick based on your own personal feelings regarding which uni fits YOU best. They're all great schools with stellar reps. Which fits you?

Do you prefer something in a somewhat country setting, with a bit of a funky student body? Dartmouth. You want a city, but not too big a city? Brown. You want prestige? Harvard. You want NYC? Columbia. Hate the snow? Stanford. Love theater? Harvard or Columbia. Want to actually study theater? Yale. Want to study art? Brown.

i live in NY i had a cousin that went to columbia and classmates that went to harvard. Cornell money wise is not that expensive because it is actually a SUNY (state university of new york) school. UC berkeley, is actually an excellent school. so don't worry so much about it. columbia is great of course but it is really really expensive as is harvard, in massacuhettes. and yale, in conneticut. i'm not sure whcich one has the best reputation but if you go online and do a search of ivy leaugue school... they have them ranked. good luck!
