The Simms are a white family. There are two kids--a girl named Lillian Jean and a boy named Jeremy. The girl gets Cassie in trouble, and Cassie gets revenge by pushing her into a ditch. The boy wants to be friends with the Logans, but they don't trust him.

I guess they show the complexities of race in the novel. Cassie actually gets revenge on a white girl (albeit secretly), and Jeremy shows that not all white people reject or scorn the black community.
