Turtles and live plants are a tough combination. Try the weighted metal strips they sell to wrap around the base of the plant.

If you got the money, do not leave the turtle in a small tank. My roommate had to get rid of her turtle. As for plants in the water, you will not be able to keep any plants in. They like to see all or there habitat without any extra additives. All your efforts will be uprooted, so to speak. What you need to do is have half of your tank be dry for the sun bathing area, which you can plant DEEP into the sand and rocks. IT will have a small chance if you do not water it to much. RES like to have a dry area dry and their water clear of things.

Have a about a 50 gallon tank, place a glass pane in the middle secured with waterproof sealant. Then have your dry area with big rocks and sand, and the water with a good filter. YOU will go threw many so make sure you keep the food on the dry area in a deep dish. Your turtle will be able to get the food. But make sure to change the water bi-weekly, or you will end up growing some fowl smelling water bacteria. I pray that God will help you with your unruly turtle.
