Good king, not so good man. His brother was trained to be a king and given the best eduction. When Arthur died, Henry was not prepared, but ultimitley did a pretty good job. He made a bad decision by divorcing Catherine, and it cost him a lot, but you need to understand that his father told him before he died, that the most important job as a king was to have an heir. He knew that Catherine was past child bearing years and he felt he had to do something to carry on the sucession. He did well in keeping peace between his kingdom and France, Spain, and Scotland. The treasury was in good shape by the time he died, and through all that gave England a very good heir. He went through a period where he felt he could trust no one and a lot of close friends ended up losing there lives. I think Henry needs to be given credit for allowing people to make there own decision about religion even though he did consider himself catholic until he died.

As far as Kings go he was pretty good. The people lived relatively peaceful lives. What he did with his wives has nothing to do with how he reigned.
