It allows both sex to socialize and communicate with each other because in real life situations people work, commute and interact together. There is really no point in separating the sexes just to avoid distractions. I went to all an All girls catholic high school and I didn't see how it helped me or anyone for that matter. Infact, it made some of the girls seem desperate when they saw a guy or started dating. Even a young male teacher created all kinds of issues with girls who had no brothers or male figures at home. I can only assume that the same applies for boys.
