Everyone in my family seem to have one apart from me and i might go get one this week but i wonder if really they are the best or just the best advertised! Not looking for top of the range but i dont want a cheap and nasty one either. 2 GB is fine for me.

No they aren't, all they are is more expensive, its a lemming thing, people buy them because other people have them and they want to try and look cool by having one.

They're overpriced crap and they scratch so easily its untrue, but you'll buy one anyway and 6 months down the line it'll be scratched to buggery - then you'll know im right - after you've wasted a bunch of cash.

Dont say i didn't warn you!

Erm yes i didn't recommend anything else i was too busy ranting like a lunatic (ahem), my personal recommendations would be either the Archos 104 which you can find here:-

or this one

it depends what you use it for. For example, if you want extras like photos, videos and games go for an iPod, but if all you want is music look for a small MP3 player. Sony, Philips and Zephly produce some 'OK' players. I have a iPod video which is worth the money, videos, films, music, photos and games, everything! A good iPod to buy for your use would be a iPod Nano.

yup, they are. I have the 30gb iPod which plays music and video. You can also include song lyrics on every song and the song's album art too. Maybe you can do that with other mp3 players, I'm not sure, but I think iPods stand out from the rest.

bought a nano five months ago,on my third replacement already. If i were u i would go to a store and have a good
look at all players and maybe ask ,because a lot of people
hate ipods on general principal.and therefore are not going
to be objective!

It's a matter of opinion but a lot of people don't think they are. They are undoubtedly the best marketed though.
I prefer iRiver generally speaking. At least with a non apple portable hdd player you don't have to faff about with itunes.

iPODS are really nameplates...nothing more...well, if u don't look at d price tag!

I really dig d mp3 players of Creative (the Zen) as well as those from SONY (yeah, a bit cheaper than iPOD) but i'll go for Creative Zen.

Of course they are...I ahve the Nano and whilst it's the smaller version of the original...the sound quality and appeal of the product is in no way comprimised.
