I wouldn't accept it. I had a similar experience before. A couple of years ago my husband and I walked to the store. It was really cold that day and I had on an old heavy coat that I had had for years. (It looked terrible.) My husband had on a pair of old jeans that had the back end ripped out. (He had just gotten done roofing a house.)
When we were walking back home, this woman pulled up beside us and handed us a $20 bill. We told her we didn't need it. She kept insisting we take it. We again tried to thank her and tell her we didn't need it. She got mad and told us to take it. I finally just took the money, said thank you, and we walked off. I don't know why she would get mad because we didn't want to take the money, but she did and I was getting scared of her. What she didn't know is my husband just brought $1200 home from roofing a house.

Depending on the size/quality of the present, a simple thank you may suffice.
Otherwise... may have to get to know said stranger better for demonstrating such kind qualities.

Well years ago when I was at a junior high school football game this older man gave me a very old penny the kind in cardboard and clear plastic. I have never had it appraised but I still have it.

Depends on what kind of present. If it was a gun, car, grandparent, or something like that, lol, run away and never look back. Now if it was a 20 dollar bill, a shirt that they bought but doesnt fit, etc. etc. thank them and run away and never look back lol

I've actually had that happen. A weird guy walked up to me and gave me a flower he obviously picked from someones yard and a small plastic horse. I took it, and then threw it away when he wasn't looking.

It depends where I am, how the person addresses me, and how I feel about what is being handed out.
What if the complete stranger were a promoter?

I would be suspicious, but very grateful. It's kind of sad that we have to be suspicious now a days when some one does something out of the kindness of their heart and with no alterior motives....

Pick someone random out of the phonebook and send them 100 "just because" cards. They cant even ask why. Just read the card.
