Dude...it's NOT the seventies anymore. Let's stop this trend now. If certain black people think they're connecting with their culture by giving them fake names, they're not. They're actually disasscociating themselves from their ancestors if not pissing on their heritage. Your African-American ancestors had names like Sam, Ella, and Dinah Mae and your African ancestors had names like Menes, Suah and Orbour. NOT LaTrina and D'Ronique or whatever. So cut the crap. They're NOT you're culture. Oh yeah, and I think latrine is Latin for toilet.

Yes and after slavery black people still WILLFULLY gave their kids American names? Why? Cause they're American and didn't want to self segregate and demean themselves. So give your kid either and American name, or an African name, but NOT a fake name.

Self-segregation only causes more racial tension and prejudice. We don't want that.

It's that so weird, we were just talking about that in class today, this girl said the most weirdest names, skittles, poochie, shalaquifa, one even said that if she had twins, she would name them, today and tomorrow. What kind of names are these? Therefore answering your question, I really don't know. Maybe they think it's cute or something, but to tell you the truth, names like that are embarrassing to live by.

Well I don't think people woh are name Latrina or Daytronique themselves are trying to connect to there ethnic culture. Maybe the sub culture in which they live sanctions these types of names. I find people who name children this way are really trying to do something they percieve as special. It is usually a combination of both parents names or other special loved ones. Furthermore all blacks are not doing this. I think you really missed the mark in describing the source of these names. As the culture continues to evolve so will the names and the traditions.
While sometimes I am perplexed by the meanings and thoughts behind the names of some of these children that is every parents right. Name your kids whatever you want to leave those other people alone for many people all they reall y have to give their kids is a name they made up.

Speaking from experience: you try to give your kids unique names. Period. I admit some of the names are very and truly ghetto. But some of the 'made' up names are unique and beautiful and have a nice ring to them and truly fit the personality of the person. Kids want to feel special and it's hard for them to be one of 15 girls name Ashley, Britney, Ann in a class of 25. That's ridiculous, because they call them "the Ashley's" or by their last names or whatever. So if your name is Ashley Bunfufugo, she'll still end up being called a ghetto name. LOL. Seriously, if they don't like their names, they can always legally change it.
My first name is Russian, middle name is French and last name is Jewish and I'm African American. Can you imagine the surprise and shock of people's faces when they meet me? Imagine me walking into a job interview and they see me? and not the raven haired green eyed woman they were imagining. IF my name was Shaquan Bonifa and people called me Sha-BooBoo, at least when I walked into the interview, they would know I was black.

I think naming a child should be the parent resposability and nott yours, If you don't like the way one couple named their baby, then don't name it that.
Maybe they don't want their kids name to be dull and boring like all the common names. I like hearing uniqu names, and incase you didn't know, EVERY name is an ethincal sam, even your surname. they all had to come from somewhere. I wanna name my future child CarmaJane, has nothing to do with ethnics, just one I like, I'll say it again I like the name. Creole Girls is right.
I understand what you are saying with the fake names, but If you werwe to actually take those"fake" names and type then into and ancestry ledgure, I'm pretty sure theyall came from somewhere. So research JUST a little. I did and I found quite A LOT!!

people name people by time periods not ethnic heritage.
That is stupid. What is wrong with just having your own name?
During the 50's every women was Donna
During the 60's Keeva was a big name, Sheila, and Virginia
during the 90's people named kids Nickie, Alysia, Halley, Jasmine. Now we are suppose to go back to Gothic times and dig up black names from Africa?
I think we should be more original than that. I heard they used to in the olden days name girls for Jewels. saphire, ruby, jewel, pearl. Or flowers is cool. rose, iris, daisymae, from hazzard county. We had a girl named cherri, peaches and candy.
I mean think out of the box.

I kinda understand where youre coming from. Don't worry about what people names there kids; I gald that they are being creative and different. My name is ancient celtic and people always think that it's a ghetto name. Our African ancestors had their orignal African names changed by their slave masters.

I feel what you're saying... but I have never heard of anyone claiming that LaKesha, LaTrina, Shaquan, etc. are African names. When I hear names like that, nothing about it says "African". Ghetto comes to mind... but not African.

Actually, to make up names, especially those incorporating the names of parents is VERY african. Sorry, but do your research.

WHOA!! Did you stop to think that maybe it has nothing to do with ethnic but everything to do with wanting a special name for their special child? Not everyone wants to have the same name and then given some hinkey nickname to separate them from all the other Tom, Dick and Harry's of the family.
