Because they are in your attic, I recommend the pest box. It is a box that attracts the rat inside, but he cannot get out once he enters. No dead carcass to deal with, just throw the entire box away. It also contains the dead rodent smell better than open traps and glue traps. I agree with Gary above, you have to find and seal off their entry holes to completely eliminate the problem.
I use the Tom Cat brand poision out in the yard in areas where the dogs cannot get to it. This stuff is great, they eat it and die off in my neighbor's yards where they go to get water. But, in your application, you really don't want dead rats in your walls and ceilings because the smell is horrid.

To get mice and rats out and keep them out, get a cat. Every fall, I have had an invasion of field mice. I've used everything in the book to get rid of them, sealed every possible entrance but they always came back. Since I got my cats, who are incidentally frightened of mice, they have left and haven't come back. I think the rodents smell or in some way sense the presence of a preditor, even if the preditors are wusses.

The first this you need to do is see where there coming in. they can get in a space that is about 1" square, maybe slightly more so seal all the possible entrances. then set out your traps and poison. will take about a week or so, but be persistent.

Glue traps are the best method to trap rats and mice. I found detailed information at http://pests.in
