Ironically I just cleared up a 7 day no pooping streak in my 3 month old yesterday. Yeah the doctor told me that it was normal for a breast fed baby to go 5-7 days without going but my first son( now 2) went with every feeding the first few months so I was totally unprepared for this. Sugar is a natural and gentle laxative. Some say Karo syrup in water but I say why not fruit juice for the sugar and the natural fruit effects too. Baby cereals will tend to bind a baby up more but fruit will have the opposite effect. Regular BM's are a function of enough fiber AND enough fluids. My experience is that the 2 year old still goes 2-3 times a day but then he has a very high fiber diet of whole grains and fruit as well as an everpresent cup of water. P.S. If you start them early on water they will drink it later.

If you feed him cereal, use rice. The oatmeal can constipate him. He is old enough to drink baby Juice now, so try a little bit of apple or apple prune juice. It doesn't really hurt them to not go for up to four days, but I wouldn't let it become a regular thing. He will get gassy and fussy because he is uncomfortable. He might also have difficulty sleeping.

Yes he should become more regular. The cereal has fiber in it which is what keeps everyone regular. It will probably be every 1 or 2 days, maybe even more now.

Yes, all of my kids were breast fed, and when I added food, as well as more water/juice products, they became more regular.
4 days is a bit long though even for only breastfed babies..check out your local La Leche League for more info.

if you're concerned about your baby's bm, you can try to help him out by massaging the area right around the outside of the anus. The dr told me to do that, at it only takes a couple of hours before my girl has a nasty package for me. Give it a try!!

I didnt breastfeed, but my daughter had the same bm issue...I was told pear juice with water, give her a lot of water, baby laxatives...She's 2 now & she just started going semi-regularly. Water helped. When she got older I gave her pedialyte.

My daughter had the same problem. We would put one ounce of juice in her bottle with her milk once a day. Until she was on soilds she then started to go normal.
